Brisbane Lions
3 in a row.

That annoys me, but on the other hand Richmond was chocka-block full of drunk, obnoxious Collingwood fans last week.
Brisbane certainly deserved the win, and Akermanis and Black were brilliant.

I have a feeling that Collingwood will be changing their theme-song very soon.

Did Collingwood win?
Are you veeery surprised?
Jacobyak_boy on September 27th, 2003 12:25 am (UTC)
Er, obviously you're not a footy fan.
"3 in a row" refers to the fact that Brisbane have now won 3 premierships in a row, including today.
So, no, Collingwood did not win.

Ah, you just confused me because you were doing a lot of complaining in your post, and when you said that Brisbane deserved to win... well...

And no, I don't watch the football, but I heard the result on the radio after posting my comment.

I am complaining that Brisbane won, yes, but conceding that they deserved to win.
I was always torn on the issue though.
On the one hand I didn't want Brisbane to win because it would be three-in-a-row. On the other hand I didn't want Collingwood to win, because their supporters are a bunch of stupid, toothless yobbos.

Bah, I was going for Collingwood but was fairly resigned to see Brisbane win... again...
Still, good on them for winning 3 in a row.

I really didn't want them to do it when I thought it was a record, but when I found out that it had been done before I didn't much care.

So, could you help a poor Canadian out and tell him what sport this is exactly that you're talking about?

Woot!

Okay, Australian Rules Football 101.

Basically the game is played on an oval shaped field.

There are 18 men per side on the field at any one time.

Ostensibly that is three on the forward line, three at half-forward (between centre and goals), three across the centre, three at half-back, three at back and three who follow the ball wherever.
However, any player is allowed to go anywhere on the field, so they rarely stick to this formation.

The game is played with a ball shaped like a rugby ball (like grid iron, except less pointy). It begins with the umpire bouncing the ball in the centre. Players handle the ball with their hands but are not allowed to throw it, they must instead punch it. A player may kick the ball, and if it is caught on the full (marked) the marking player gets a free kick. Although the ball must carry a minimum of 15 metres to be payed a mark. Players may run with the ball, but must bounce it every few metres as they run (only occasionally, they don't dribble like a basketball). If a player is grabbed (tackled) whilst in posession of the ball he must pass the ball on immediately. Any infringements are punished by awarding a free kick to the opposition.

The object is to score by kicking the ball through the gap between the taller posts (a goal, worth 6 points) or through the gap between a tall post and a shorter post (a behind, worth 1 point).

There is a lot more to it than that, but that's the basics.

Today was the Grand Final of the Australian Football League, and Brisbane won for the third year in a row. A feat that hasn't occurred for around fifty years.
