Storage Space
So, what the hell am I meant to do with 10G of LJ storage space?

For those silly enough not to "subscribe" to it, here's the latest from news:

To: Free Account Holders
From: LiveJournal
We're doubling your userpics! You can now upload up to 6 userpics.

To: Paid Account Holders
From: LiveJournal
We've increased your storage space from 100MB to 1GB! That's ten times the storage space you had before. Use it to upload your holiday photos to ScrapBook.

To: Permanent Account Holders
From: LiveJournal
We've increased your storage space to 10GB!

These gifts are permanent -- they're not just for the holiday! We hope you enjoy these increased levels!

How do you get a permanent account?

You could always use the 10Gb as an offsite backup... Actual storage isn't worth squat these days, but the support systems to make it as reliable as LJ would need it to be is, so it'd be a good place to backup any documents and stuff that you've got. I wonder if they have rsync support.

LJ had a permanent account sale a little while ago, for a few days only.

Which is part of the reason I said you'd have to be silly not to be subscribed to the news feed.

Of course, I doubt that many people would have jumped on a chance to pay A$200 for a permanent account, but I was feeling all cashed up at the time.

Yeah, I could have gotten it, but almost 10 years worth of paid account??? 10 years is a LOOONG time in terms of the internet - 10 years ago, the speed of AUSTRALIA'S entire backbone was 256kbps.

Well, it pays for more than just a length of time (and it's more like 6 years worth). I get some fringe-benefits that paid accounts don't, and I have the convenience that my paid account won't expire at an inconvenient moment (like when I'm unemployed).

But, I also consider it a donation.

Funny thing about the internet, you really don't want to have to pay for things, but when payment is optional you start to feel a lot more generous.

I try and pay for things I think are worthwhile - like my email address, and livejournal. I think it can all be linked to Paul Fenwick's idea of Good Will and Ill Will.

Good Will
Yeah, and LJ is very good at cultivating Good Will. Especially when things go wrong, they are very quick to compensate people.

Of course, I could be a cynic and say that the latest account upgrades were planned and they have just used them as an easy way to compensate people for the recent crapness...

Oh My God, you just made my day! =D
