Went to last_reprise's place for an end of school celebration party last night.
Have the official end of school thingy on Monday.
I'm going to win a $50 Reading's voucher. So there.

A few mentions about the movie night poll:
In case you're wondering, the votes attributed to yak_boy are actually being made by his darling fiancee Emily.
And some of the movies in the poll also belong to her, so I can distance myself from The Crow: City of Angels, which is a travesty of a film (despite having Iggy Pop in it).

I'd also like to note that my 24hr, 5 vote rule will apply after I post Rd1-Pool 5, so beware, that will probably only be up for 24 hrs.
I wanna get this baby rolling!

I have to go do my laundry now, but before I go Here's Round 1 - Pool 3 of the Movie Night PollCollapse )

Australia surprised everyone tonight by not losing the rugby.
And Waltzing Matilda was sung.

Is it just me, or does that song suck?
From time to time you hear the suggestion that it should be our national anthem.
Apart from the fact that only a complete fuckwit would want a song about a suicidal sheep rustler for a national anthem, I still have another big objection to this song.

I live in a city. A big, sprawling city with a skyline that's resembling New York's more and more each day.
I live in a small flat in an inner-city suburb.
I see kangaroos from time to time - when I go to the zoo.
I very, very rarely see sheep (or jumbucks if you prefer).
The image of Australia portrayed in Waltzing Matilda, The Man from Snowy River, McCleod's Daughters, The Dish, that "Sunburnt Country" poem, The Crocodile Hunter, Crocodile Dundee, The Bush Tucker Man, Ned Kelly, etc, etc is not my image of Australia.
I travel to or through the bush sometimes, but my experience of Australia is, for the most part, urban, cosmopolitan and modern. It always has been.
In school we learnt all this bush culture stuff - it was meaningless to me then, and it's meaningless to me now.

I don't want to be part of that culture.
Great that it exists - if you want to live out in the bush, go ahead.
I hate the bush, or the country, or whatever.
I mean, it's okay to visit once in a while, but to live?

I like to drink lattes. I like to go to the movies. I like to go to a pub, and not recognise anyone. I like shopping. I like walking through green parks full of European trees. I like to eat gelati. I like having pizza, or thai, or souvlaki delivered to my door. I like walking to the local Indian restaurant. I like that I have a choice of at least three local video stores. I like public transport. I like 24 hour supermarkets that have dozens of different toothpastes to choose from, and even more types of ice-cream. I like being able to buy pornography from the local newsagent, and they don't know my name. I like eating at the local vegetarian restaurant. I like being within walking distance of major cultural and sporting events. I like that I can go and see an elephant any day of the week. I like living in the city, and I wouldn't trade it for any amount of "fresh air".

Back to the poll. I'm increasing the pace a little bit, two polls in one day.
If you haven't filled out the earlier polls (Round 1 - Pools 1-3), go and do so...

Movie Night Poll - Round 1 - Pool 4Collapse )
