Pre-order now!
Today in EB I saw two posters side-by-side that told a very interesting story about the upcoming consoles.

One said "trade in your PS2 and 25 games and get a PS3 for $699".
The other said "trade in your PS2 and 25 games and get $300 off the price of a Wii".

Confirmation that a PS3 is going to cost you the tidy sum of 1000 of your Australian dollars?

It's a lot, but video games (and consoles) depreciate in value pretty quickly.

That's (relatively) old news -- EB have been saying "$1000 for the PS3" for a couple of months now. Not sure if that's for the super-deluxe version, or the bare-bones version.

If I buy a console this time around (and that's a very big if), it'll be a Wii. No question about it. Meanwhile, I have a DS to pay off (yay for lay-by. yay for credit card vouchers that'll pay most of the cost ...)

I've never asked anyone at EB and this is the first they've had any prices published, as far as I've seen. But, $1000 is the price I extrapolated from the US price of $599, so as I say, this is just a confirmation of my suspicion.

This should be the price for the deluxe version.

$599 USD is (by today's exchange rate) $786 AUD, so Aussie consumers will be getting ripped off royally on the import, but what's new?

*nods* At that price, I see it as way too expensive - especially since I have "only" a standard definition TV, and hence can't take "advantage" of the higher resolution of the PS3 or Xbox 360. No way in hell am I forking out for an HDTV just to play games. It's not worth it to me.

As for the ripoff, that's par for the course, as you say. There's a very good reason why I bought my high-end telephoto zoom lens for my camera from a parallel importer rather than from a local dealer - I saved about a quarter of the cost that way!

Well, not just games. DVDs, HD TV... Even the Wii.

All the technology is going in the direction of higher quality.

But another option is to set up a computer monitor to watch that stuff on. 1024x768 is a good deal better than a regular TV.

ps2 & even 25 shitty games would get more elsewhere.
eb are pricey.. but $1000 for ps3..fark
