OH&S Nazis! I hate those guys!
Harrison Ford has threatened to leave the new Indiana Jones movie unless he gets to use a real whip.

The 64-year-old actor - who plays the daredevil archaeologist - has been told the weapon will have to be computer generated because of new film safety rules.

But Harrison thinks the regulations are ridiculous and has reportedly said he'll pull out of the film if he can't wield his own whip.

I'm not sure which is sillier: a CGI whip or a 64-year-old action hero.

Part of me is excited about a new Indiana Jones movie and part of me wants Harry to pull out for the sake of his own dignity (and perhaps for the sake of the franchise).

Apologies to those of you who subscribe to Warren Ellis's blog (warrenelliswire).

Thats a bit judgemental don't you think? It may have been awhile since an Indiana Jones film came out but so what? It could still be a great hit. The problem is not the age he is, its his attitude. After all, Sean Connery has been in plenty of great action films in recent years and he's like 70.

Sheesh, I was only joking.

I know Harrison Ford is more than capable of making a decent action film. Firewall was only passable, but that had nothing to do with Ford's performance.

The only real issue is that he is starting to look his age, so they'll either have to use a lot of make-up tricks or set the film in like the 1960s.

I'm hoping it's set in the 50s, as that seems far back enough to fit the Indiana Jones ouvre, but not too far back to seem implausible for the relative age of Ford and his character.

Maybe he can come up against some of the Nazis hiding out in South America after the war.

Nazis? I thought it was gonna be the Russians this time.

I have no idea. Russians sounds likely for the 1950s, though.

Oh, and Connery is 76, only 8 years older than Ford.

If he once more appears alongside Ford in the new Indiana Jones (as is rumoured), they'll definitely need plenty of make-up tricks to make them seem plausible as father and son.

Really I am excited. Ford's age isn't really the issue. What concerns me is that they'll cock up another great franchise like they did with Star Wars, with a shitty shitty story, and shitty unrealistic CG effects.

I actually prefer CGI effects unless they are so cheap that you can see stuff like ghosting, especially compared to things like camera tricks that movies that didn't/don't have access to such technologies use instead.

Compared to actually cracking an actual whip?

I'm pretty sure the issue is that Harrison Ford actually knows how to use a whip, and pretending to crack a non-existant whip is an insult to his craft (as an actor and a... whipmaster).

Well is isn't like the audience would be missing out on all that much. The sound of the whip crack would be in all likelihood be a stock sound effect. Also if the whip was really cracking, the motion would probably be too fast for the camera to pick up anyway and so we'd be left with watching either the actor pretending to crack the whip for the camera or that segment slowed down.

On a more personal level, as a consumer of films, I prefer the money and time that goes into preparing a scene like to go to other stuff, like better effects or even better food to the crew or something.
