I'd been avoiding this one, because I take offense at the American terminology.
So, feel free to imagine the above phrased in whatever your local idiom may be.

Speaking of Americanisms, I am rather disturbed by the proliferation of the term "fresher" on campus.
Apart from being a hideously clunky abbreviation, the preferred term is "first year" which can be abbreviated to "firsty".
Unless, that is, you enjoy sounding like a Seppo.

the choral societies have been referring to new members as freshers for decades. and I don't think that it came from an American source, much more likely English or just "hasn't been corrupted yet" it is possible that this spate is not of American origin. (I say possible rather than likely)

You're probably right, the term just grates on me.

I was a Flufy.

Fucking little upstart first year.

Now, eight years on, I'm a first year again.
I think I'll dub myself a Yafy:

You're a first year???
Loki Carbislokicarbis on March 8th, 2007 12:30 am (UTC)
Not yet. (Although when I do, it'll be the ninth time.) At the moment I just work here...

That question wasn't aimed at you.
It was what Yafy stands for.

In England they were called 'freshers' too. (Orientation week included a "Fresher's Fayre" - basically a huge tent set up with all the clubs and societies so you could wander around and sign up for stuff.)
